Rizarios Exhibition Center

The Rizarios Exhibition and Meeting Center (map location 9) is located in Monodendri, Zagori and has been operating since the summer of 2000. It is a modern Center, housed in the fully renovated and remodeled Mansion Pantazi, co-funded by the cross-border Interreg II Programme and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The activities of this Center are aimed at both the Greek and the inter-Balkan area and the events hosted there so far, radually evolve it into a center of photographic heritage and tradition.

The Pantazi Mansion was built around 1900 and is one of the most beautiful examples of the architecture of Zagori.

The imposing two-storey house stands out for its elaborate stonework, the high stone enclosure and the paved courtyards. It has utility rooms on the lower floor and basements, as well as spacious infrastructure spaces and many windows on the second floor. The role of the old Zagorian “bed” has been abolished and simpler wooden ceilings are retained with a cooler interior style, white walls, light colours and some classicist elements.

Similar imposing buildings can be found in almost all the villages of Western, Central and Eastern Zagori.

The Rizarios Exhibition Centre of Monodendri presents the Photography Exhibition

"Greece after the war - The years of hope"

In the context of the celebration of the 180th anniversary of the foundation of the PES, the Rizarios Exhibition Centre of Monodendri welcomes with joy and emotion our compatriot Robert McCabe (naturalized Greek citizen in 2020) and welcomes his magical photographs.

Photos that recall from our childhood memories images of homes, moments of everyday life, in the city, in the village, in the countryside and make us smile nostalgically.

It is a series of 70 large-format black and white and colour photographs taken in the years after the war, capturing the effort, struggle, hope and smiles of Greece on the difficult road to recovery.

In 2007, the Rizarios Exhibition Centre of Monodendri hosted the philhellenic photographer Robert McCabe and his exhibition “On the Road to Greece with a Rolleiflex”.

The present exhibition was first presented in June 2023 at the European Cultural Centre of Delphi, then travelled under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of National Defence to Seoul and now, with the kind permission of the National and Historical Museum, it is hosted at the Rizarios Exhibition Centre of Monodendri.

“In my travels during those years, from Epirus to Crete and from Pylos to Rhodes, I was pleasantly surprised by the cheerfulness, warmth and hospitable spirit of these people who had survived the nightmare of war and its aftermath”

                                                                                                                                     Robert McCabe

Exhibition Duration: September 2019 – September 2022
Organization-Production: the Rizarios Foundation
Editing-Coordination: Takis Anagnostopoulos
